Paying Over £50 Per Automotive Lead?

Your Google Ads Could Be Working Harder.

I'm Matt George, an independent Google Ads consultant for UK car dealerships and multi-franchise dealer groups. When cost per enquiry climbs while budget stays flat, the fix is rarely more spend — it's tighter campaign structure, honest search-term control and bidding that optimises against sold vehicles rather than form fills.

Why costs climb

Why Your Cost Per Lead May Be Too High

Automotive is one of the most competitive categories in Google Ads. Manufacturer-funded budgets, dealer group consolidation and third-party comparison sites all push click prices up, while the platform increasingly decides where your money goes on its own.

Cost per lead rarely rises because the market changed overnight. It rises because the account stopped being actively managed: campaigns left on default settings, searches nobody reviews, budgets spread thinly across every model and location, and conversion data that tells Google the wrong thing is valuable.

For a dealer group the effect compounds. A single poor assumption — counting form views as conversions, or letting brand traffic flatter blended results — hides weak non-brand performance across every site in the group at once.

What £50 per lead actually means

  • Cost per enquiry

    £50

  • Enquiries that become a sale (1 in 10)

£500 ad cost per vehicle sold

  • On a £2,000 front-end margin

25% of gross profit before the sale is even made

Illustrative arithmetic only. Bringing cost per lead down by a third has the same effect on acquisition cost as increasing your budget — without spending an extra pound.

Where the money leaks

Common Causes of Wasted Automotive Advertising Spend

These are the issues I find most often when reviewing dealership and dealer group accounts. Individually they look minor. Together they are usually the difference between a £50 lead and a £30 lead.

Performance Max running unmanaged

One catch-all campaign spanning brand, new, used, service and every location, with no asset-group segmentation and no exclusions to protect budget.

Brand traffic flattering results

Blended cost per lead looks healthy because people searching your dealership name are cheap. Non-brand performance, where the money is really spent, stays invisible.

Search terms nobody has reviewed

Queries for repairs, parts, jobs, reviews, other marques and neighbouring towns keep taking clicks that will never become a test drive.

Models competing with each other

Overlapping model and derivative campaigns bid against one another, pushing your own cost per click up and spreading conversion data too thinly to learn from.

Duplicate or inflated conversions

Page views, form views and repeated actions all counting as conversions teaches automated bidding to chase volume instead of qualified enquiries.

Paid traffic sent to the homepage

Enquirers land on a general homepage with no matching model, offer or stock context — so the click is paid for and then wasted.

Stale vehicle feeds

Merchant Center and vehicle feed data drifting out of date with sold or mispriced stock, so spend goes to vehicles that cannot be bought.

No view of what happens after the form

Without CRM data feeding back, nobody can tell which campaigns produce sales and which produce enquiries the sales team ignores.

The pattern behind almost every high cost per lead

  • Budget follows habit rather than margin — the biggest spender keeps the biggest share.
  • Automation is left to optimise against whatever conversion was easiest to set up years ago.
  • Reports show clicks and enquiries, but never a cost per sold vehicle by model or site.

The approach

How I Improve Automotive PPC Efficiency

Current Google Ads tooling is only useful when it is pointed at the right commercial question. Each of these is applied for a reason, not because it is new.

Google Ads Search

Model, derivative and used-stock campaigns built around real buying intent, so budget follows the vehicles you actually want to sell rather than the ones that happen to get clicks.

Performance Max

Asset groups split by marque, model and location with proper exclusions, so automation works inside commercial guardrails instead of spreading spend across the whole group.

AI Max, where appropriate

Query expansion and asset generation switched on where it produces incremental qualified enquiries, and held back where it dilutes control of high-value model terms.

Brand exclusions & segmentation

Brand and non-brand separated so the expensive half of the account is judged honestly, with competitor and irrelevant queries excluded rather than paid for.

Search-term & wasted-spend analysis

Scheduled query reviews and negative keyword discipline that stop the steady leak of clicks that were never going to become an enquiry.

Automated bidding & experiments

Bid strategies set against the conversion that matters, then tested — rather than left on default settings inherited from a previous agency.

GA4 & Google Tag Manager

Clean event measurement across forms, calls, finance applications and WhatsApp, so enquiry volume in reporting matches enquiry volume in the CRM.

Vehicle ads where eligible

Inventory surfaced against shopping-style vehicle intent, with feeds kept accurate so spend only reaches stock that is genuinely available.

The commercial effect is straightforward: fewer clicks that were never going to buy, more of the budget on the models and locations with real demand, and decisions based on the cost of a sold vehicle rather than the cost of a form submission.

Experience

Genuine Automotive Campaign Experience

I have managed Google Ads for franchise dealerships, multi-franchise dealer groups and used-vehicle retailers — not adjacent ecommerce accounts adapted to look automotive.

Work has covered new vehicle model campaigns, used stock and part-exchange acquisition, finance-led offers, aftersales and service retention, and multi-location accounts where each site needs its own budget and its own accountability.

Franchise experience spans retailer groups representing marques including Nissan, Hyundai, MG, Kia, Renault, BYD, Dacia, Changan, OMODA and JAECOO. That means understanding manufacturer campaign rules, co-operative funding expectations and the reality that a dealer's margin varies enormously between a new retail order and a used car sold with finance.

Lead quality & attribution

Lead Quality and Offline Vehicle Sales Attribution

A form submission is not a sale, and a cheap enquiry that never answers the phone is the most expensive kind. If Google is optimising towards submissions, it will keep finding more submissions — including the poor ones.

01

Capture properly

GA4 and Google Tag Manager events across enquiry forms, calls, finance applications and messaging, with enhanced conversions passing hashed first-party data so enquiries are attributed rather than lost.

02

Record the source in the CRM

Each enquiry arrives with campaign, model and location attached, so the sales team can see where it came from and you can see what happens next.

03

Close the loop on sold vehicles

When a vehicle is sold, the sale is matched back to the original enquiry and click — CRM-based offline conversion tracking rather than guesswork.

04

Feed outcomes back into bidding

Offline conversions are imported into Google Ads, so automated bidding optimises towards enquiries that became sales, not the ones that were easiest to count.

What you see each month

  • Cost per lead by model, location and campaign
  • Cost per qualified lead, after the sales team has spoken to it
  • Cost per sold vehicle, including offline conversions
  • Enquiry-to-sale rate by source
  • Wasted spend identified and recovered each month

Offline tracking depends on CRM access or exports and consent-compliant tagging. Where those are not yet in place, closing the loop is the first piece of work.

Who I work with

Types of Automotive Businesses Supported

The commercial question is different in each case — new retail volume, used stock turn, finance penetration or workshop utilisation — so the campaign structure has to follow it.

Single-site franchise dealerships

One showroom, one budget and a cost per lead that has to be justified against new and used retail targets.

Multi-franchise dealer groups

Several sites and marques under one account structure, with budget allocated by location and performance reported per dealership.

Used vehicle supermarkets

High-volume stock where feed accuracy, model-level bidding and part-exchange acquisition do most of the work.

Prestige & specialist retailers

Lower volumes and higher margins, where enquiry quality matters far more than raw enquiry count.

Van & LCV dealers

Commercial buyers searching by payload, payload class and finance terms, with a very different intent pattern to retail car traffic.

Leasing & broker businesses

Comparison-heavy search behaviour where price transparency, landing page speed and call handling decide the outcome.

Independent forecourts

Smaller budgets that cannot absorb wasted spend, so structure and negative keyword hygiene have to be tight.

Service, parts & aftersales

Retention campaigns and workshop bookings where the goal is lifetime value rather than a one-off vehicle sale.

The review

The Automotive PPC Review Process

A focused review of where the budget is going and why the cost per lead looks the way it does — not a sales presentation.

01

Review request

You send the dealership details, monthly Google Ads budget, current cost per lead and where you think it is going wrong.

02

Account & tracking review

I review campaign structure, Search and Performance Max performance, search terms, budget allocation, conversion actions, GA4 and Tag Manager, and vehicle feed health.

03

Findings call & written summary

A short call with a written summary of the main causes of wasted spend and the priorities I would address first. No obligation to go further.

04

Implementation, if you want it

Either hands-on management, or a prioritised action plan your own team or agency can deliver against.

Cost-per-lead calculator

What Could a Lower Cost Per Lead Do for Enquiry Volume?

Enter your current spend and cost per lead, then compare it with a realistic target. The point is not the exact number — it is seeing how much extra enquiry volume sits inside the same budget.

At the same monthly spend

Leads today

167

Leads at target

250

83 more enquiries a month

That is a 50% increase in lead volume on £10,000 of spend — without increasing budget.

Illustrative calculation only, using simple arithmetic and the figures you enter. It is not a forecast, projection, quote or guarantee of performance, and it takes no account of lead quality, seasonality, stock availability or your own sales conversion.

Questions

Automotive PPC FAQs

Straight answers on benchmarks, guarantees, access and how the engagement works.

There is no single benchmark. Cost per lead depends on your marques, location, new versus used mix, budget size, competition from other dealers and how tightly the account is structured. A review establishes what a realistic range looks like for your market rather than quoting an industry average that may be irrelevant to you.
